Liberia has extended the contract of Englishman James Peter Butler as Liberia National Team Head coach.

According to information gathered, the contract extension of Butler came after a short meeting that was held by the Executive Committee of the Liberia Football Association on August 2, 2021.

The new extension of the Lone Star Coach is with a mandate to ensure that the West African nation qualify for the 2022 World Cup Finals in Qatar.

The former West Ham United player who previous contract ended on August 8, 2021, has been in charge of the team since August 2019 where his goal during his previous contract was to qualify Liberia to the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations finals in Cameroon and the 2022 Qatar World Cup finals but failed to get pass Chad in the preliminary round when they lost 5-4 on post-match penalties after the both legs ended 1-1 on aggregate.

Butler biggest achievement since his appointment as coach of Lone Star came during the preliminary round of the 2022 World Cup where he guided the Lone star to a 3-1 victory in his debut in Monrovia against Sierra Leone.

Though Liberia lost the second leg 1-0 in Freetown, the Red, White and Blue boys advanced to the group stage qualifier on a 3-2 aggregate. However, since then, he has played several friendlies but with poor results.

Liberia is expected to begin her 2022 World Cup campaign this September when the country kick off against Nigeria’s Super Eagle and the country has be drawn in Group C along with Nigeria, Cape Verde and Central African Republic.
