I monitored the press conference held by the Secretary General of the ANC, Cllr. Aloysius Toe, with dismay over his choices of words and aspersions casted on Political Leaders of the Collaboration. While it is the prerogative of each party to defend its values, the tendency of prematurely exposing resolvable internal issues publicly, is not only provocative, it neither wins the political sympathies intended by any party nor demonstrate the core values of the CPP.
As we are in a competitive environment, there will always be contentious issues. However, we expect parties within the CPP to exhaust all internal mechanisms and expertise available to express dissatisfactions and resolve these issues with civility and respect.
Clearly, how each party responds to various issues demonstrate its strengths and preparedness to lead, unify and fulfill the aspirations of the Liberian people. We at the Unity Party have chosen a path of tolerance and wisdom based on our experience, values, and commitment to the people to foment true change. Thus, we remain focused on the bigger issues such as preparing the CPP to WIN 2023 and effectively developing the team and strategy that would address poor governance, post-Covid recovery, stabilizing the economy, attracting investors & stimulating domestic entrepreneurship, and revamping basic social services for our people; we must begin planning now by building cohesiveness and consensus.
Make no mistake, we are deeply concerned about the various issues raised by our counterparts, the ALP and the ANC. As we are poised to assume chairmanship of the CPP, we will proactively engage all parties to resolve them and unify the collaboration. With the acquiescence of each of the four Political Leaders, a committee has been setup by the Chair of the CPP to investigate the claims and counterclaims concerning the Framework Document. We caution all parties to refrain from the press and allow the committee to submit its findings; in the process of their investigation, each party will be given the opportunity to respond appropriately.
The UP reassures all Parties in the Collaboration and the Liberian people that we will not be lured into taking sides and making uninformed retaliatory public statements regardless of how egregious the situation may seem; we will respond based on facts and following due processes specifically with regards issues as critical as the Framework Document. In such a case as we are now confronted with, clarity can be sought, and if necessary our missteps corrected, by working together for the common good of the Collaboration.
We strongly believe that the CPP represents the best alternative for change; we will ensure that it holds and we intend to align as many political parties to our common goal.
