LIBERIA – Liberty Party Chairman Musa Bility has filed a US$1 million lawsuit against Montserrado County Senator Darius for defamation of character.
Cllr. Arthur Johnson, making the disclosure on Wednesday, January 26, 2022 said Senator Dillon is being dragged before the law for actions of wrong, libel and slander by attachment.
The popular criminal lawyer also disclosed that his client is claiming US$1 million in general damages for wrongful action and defamation.
Cllr. Johnson also said the lawsuit was prompted by negative comments attributed to Senator Dillon against Mr. Bility wherein the lawmaker in Decmeber 2021 alleged, defamed, accused, stiagmtaized and tainted the character of the Liberty Party Chairman.
He added that Senator Dillon is on record for referring to the Liberty Party Chairman as criminal and fraudster as well as being the one who altered the framework document of the Collaborating Political Parties (CPP).
The lawyer made it known that as per the law, when the character of a person is defamed, he or she has the right to drag the accuser to court.
The National Executive Committee of the political party subsequently wrote the National Elections Commission (NEC) to inform the body of the suspension of the executives.
According to him, the lawsuit by attachment at a cost of US$1 million will compel Senator Dillon to provide properties worth such amount as collateral to restrict his movement or else he will be sent to jail.
“No one makes irresponsible statements and be allowed to go free. Under international protocol, people are free to make statements, but they must be prepared to account for them. Mr. Bility is suing for Liberia to make a precedent and Senator Dillon who was elected must be somebody that deals with ethics,” Cllr. Johnson declared.
Senator Dillon and Chairman Bility have been at odds with each other since the Montserrado lawmaker and 15 others including Senator Nyonblee Karnga-Lawrence and other top executives of the Liberty Party were suspended by the National Executive Committee due to their failure to settle their dues with the party.
